Fertilizing?

Well, since we have chickens, who lay eggs, we have had to have a generic conversation with the kids about why we can't hatch them into chicks.  No rooster to fertilize the eggs.  We didn't go into detail about how this fertilization takes place - I'm not ready for that yet - but we soon found they had their own picture in their mind about the process.

I overheard the kids playing one day.  Apparently the girls were the hens and the boys were the roosters - makes sense, huh?  They had made a toy bin into a nest by padding it with doll blankets.  All I hear is, "Ok, now I'm going to fertilize the egg."  In a mild panic I peeked around the corner to see exactly what that meant.  Grace, sitting in her "nest" says, "lay, lay, lay," apparently signifying that she has laid an egg, and climbs out of her nest.  Joshua then climbs into the nest and says, "fertilize, fertilize," signifying that the egg is now "fertilized."  Grace then climbs back in to incubate and hatch the egg.

So much for "the birds and the bees!"
